IKAN has been trying to forge a better relationship between wildlife – especially marine mammals – and humans since 1996. The organisation is a citizens’ network of people working towards coexisting with wildlife, including dolphins and whales on Japan’s coasts.
IKAN has challenged the use of cetaceans (whales, the dolphins, and the porpoises) since its establishment over 25 years ago, and called for conservation management in Japan, where regulations tend to favour the whaling and dolphin hunting industry.
IKAN aims to educate Japanese communities about cetacean conservation and works with other non-profit organisations to change hunting policy locally and nationally, as well as to ensure that broader policies also consider impacts on these beautiful mammals.
